How to Make a Crossword Puzzle
You do not need specialty constructor software to make a classroom crossword. Start with a topic or vocabulary list, keep clues editable, let a program build the interlocking grid, then print a student sheet and answer key.

1. Choose a topic or paste a word list
Topic mode asks AI for candidate answers and clues. Word-list mode keeps your answers and can fill missing clues only. Teachers often start from spelling lists; see crossword maker from a word list. Prefer a ready seed? Try solar system , world capitals , greek mythology , parts of speech , states of matter , or synonyms .
2. Review every clue
AI drafts are not labeled fact-verified. Shorten definitions for younger students, remove answer leaks, and swap any word that does not fit your lesson. Grid rebuilds do not spend another AI credit.
3. Build and validate the grid
A deterministic engine places interlocking words, numbers the clues, and runs structural checks (ghost words, mismatches). “Grid checks passed” means structure only — not that the clues are classroom-perfect.
4. Print with an answer key
Export a student PDF (optional name/date lines) and a separate answer-key PDF. Details on printable crossword maker and crossword maker for teachers.
5. Optional: share a practice link
Signed-in users can publish an unlisted play link. Share pages are noindex — they are for students, not SEO.
Quick checklist
- Answers are English A–Z only (no digits or punctuation in the grid).
- Clues do not contain the answer string.
- You reviewed AI text before printing.
- Answer key version matches the student sheet.
