How to Make a Crossword from a Word List

Already have a spelling list, unit vocabulary, or ESL word bank? Keep those answers — do not start from a blank topic. Paste the list, add clues (or leave blanks for later), build an interlocking grid, then print a student sheet and matching answer key.

Open the word-list crossword maker or jump to the teachers classroom preset with a ready classroom sample.

1. Gather answers only (clues can wait)

Copy 8–20 English words from your lesson plan or LMS. Prefer A–Z letters only — digits and punctuation are stripped for the grid. One answer per line is enough; you can add clues later. Formats that work:

2. Paste into Word list mode

On the word list maker, stay in Words / Paste text mode. Click Parse into editor, then skim for duplicates — two identical answers confuse numbering. Prefer a ready seed? Try classroom objects , parts of speech , irregular verbs , esl food vocabulary , fractions , telling time , or synonyms .

3. Fill or tighten clues

Empty clues still allow a layout build, but classroom handouts need definitions students can solve. Keep clues short, age-appropriate, and free of the answer string. AI clue-fill (when enabled) only drafts missing clues — it should not replace your vocabulary list without confirmation.

4. Build grid, then print

Click Build grid. Shuffle layout is free and never spends AI credits. Export a student PDF (optional name/class/date lines) and a separate answer-key PDF. Details: how to print crossword worksheets · printable crossword maker.

Word list vs Topic (AI)

Use word list when the answers are fixed by your curriculum. Use Topic (AI) when you want candidate words + clues from a theme, then edit. Both paths share the same grid engine, print layout, and free demo constraints.
